I’m a Hula Dancer!

Okay, so maybe I’m not really a hula dancer, lol.  But today I did have the pleasure of sitting in on an afternoon of classes at Hâlau Hula `O Walea in Toronto. I watched a drumming and chanting class, participated in a beginners Hula class, and watched a more advanced Hula class. And what did I learn you ask?  Well let me share :)

I learned that the Hula, as beautiful and simple and graceful as it may appear to observers, is in actuality a very complex dance form.  I was given a complimentary lesson today and learned the most basic steps of Hula and even the most seemingly simple moves were quite the workout! A one hour class left me sweating, thighs, abs, and calves burning! It was intense!

I also saw up close and personal the power that exists in this dance form.  From the brief history that was explained to me by my kumu (teacher), a lot of aspects of the Hula came from warriors, so there is an underlying strength there that is palpable - you can feel it in the movements, in the chants, and in the discipline.

So no, I’m probably not a hula dancer yet, lol.  But I am the proudest new haumana (student) of this powerful little Toronto Hâlau (school). And I am so excited to learn and to grow in the traditions of this beautiful art form.

Plus, I’m totally already learning the lingo! Impressive, right?

Me: this group is already blowing up my notifications and my email inbox lol. this is going to be epic. i can feel it. in me bones.
Saturne (yes my cousin's real name is Saturne): lol don't get gassed..It will die down by next week pick back up...then die down again
Me: not if i have anything to say about it. there is a lot of planning to be done. dresses to be chosen, dinners to be planned, conference calls, skype meetings, rose petal aisles, ice sculptures, dove releases, chocolate fountains, and a reception entrance involving stilt walkers, flaming archways and an elephant. YOU'RE WELCOME.
Saturne (yes my cousin's real name is Saturne): are you crazy??? elephants are scared of doves...You want a massacre on our hands!!
Me: doves = ceremony. elephant = reception. KEEP UP.
Saturne (yes my cousin's real name is Saturne): i thought elephants were night blind
Me: it's okay, he'll be blindfolded anyway.
Saturne (yes my cousin's real name is Saturne): lmaooooooooo *deep sigh*

My Chemical Romance - Helena

Pleasantries

I have this thing where I think that the first thing you say to the people in your life - your family, your friends, your work colleagues, etc. - the first thing you say everyday should be pleasant. “Good morning!” “How was your day?” “You look great!”

Even if you’re mad. Even if you’re in a bad mood. Even if you have to fake it. Why not start where you want to end? All the negative stuff you can work out in the middle.

mind. blasted.

mind. blasted.

You are all stardust …

“Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And, the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: You are all stardust.”

― Lawrence M. Krauss, theoretical physicist.
